试比较以下两句（注意介词不同）。如：

She was admitted to [into] the Party. 她被吸收入党。

She was admitted as a Party member. 她被接纳为党员。

表示“允许进入”等，也含有动态意味，所以一般不与 enter, go in 之类的词连用。如：

通常不说：He opened the door and admitted me to enter into the house.（可将to enter去掉）

3. 和于习语admit of，其意为“容许有”“有……余地”“有……的可能”。如：

The price quoted will not admit of any allowance. 所报价格不容打折扣。

This sentence admits of several interpretations. 这个句子可以有许多解释。

■advance n.&v.

1. 用作名词，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示“前进”时，多为不可数名词；表示“进展”“进步”“改进”等义时，多为可数名词。如：

The army’s advance was very slow. 部队推进很慢。

China has made great advances in industry. 中国在工业方面进步很大。

(2) 表示“取得进步”“获得进展”等，习惯上与动词make搭配。此时的advance根据情况，有时是可数的，有时是不可数的。如：

China has made great advances in industry. 中国在工业方面进步很大。

Under this system popular education has made persistent advance. 在这个制度下，普及教育取得了持续的发展。

We need more money if we are to make any further advances in this area of science. 要想在这一科学领域取得进一步的发展，我们需要更多的资金。

(3) in advance（事先，提前）和in advance of（在……前面）。如：

The rent must be paid in advance. 租金必须预付。

He is far in advance of his class. 他在班上遥遥领先。

in advance of有时可用于指时间“比……早”。如：

She arrived in advance of everyone else. 她比其他任何人都到得早。

(4) 表示“预付款”时，是可数名词，通常用单数，意指“一笔预付款”。如：

They gave me an advance of a month’s pay. 他们给我预支了一个月的工资。

表示“……方面的预付款”，后接介词on。如：

She asked for an advance on her salary. 她要求预工资。

He was paid $2,000 as an advance on royalties. 他收到了2,000美元的版锐。

若要具体表示款项数量的多少，可用an advance of这样的结构。如：

The bank gave [made] her an advance of $500. 银行贷给她500美元。

They offered an advance of ￡5,000 after the signing of the contract. 他们在合同签订后预付了5,000英镑。

2. 用作动词，注意以下介词搭配：

(1) 表示朝着某个方面前进，通常后接介词 to, towards。如：

The troops advanced to the river. 部队行进到河边。

They advanced towards the castle. 他们向城堡推进。

He advanced towards me in aggressive style. 他向我步步进逼。

(2) 表示“朝……进发或挺进”，通常后接介词on, upon。如：

The army advanced on the capital. 部队向首都挺进。

Napoleon’s army advanced on Moscow. 拿破仑的军队向莫斯科推进。

(3) 表示进攻的对象，通常用介词 on, upon。如：

The soldiers advanced on the enemy. 士兵们向敌人进击。

They advanced upon the enemy. 他们向敌人进攻。

(3) 表示“把……提前”时，通常与from…to…短语搭配使用，与postpone互为反义词。如：

The date of the meeting was advanced from 10 to 3 June. 会议日期已由6月10日提前到6月3日。

(4) 表示“预支（钱）”“借（钱）”，通常接双宾语。如：

The bank advanced me $5,000. 银行借给我5,000美元。

He asked his employer to advance him a month’s salary. 他请求雇主先预支一个月的薪水。

■advice n.

1. 表示“建议”“劝告”“忠告”等，是不可数名词，若表示一条或几条建议或劝告，要借用 piece, bit, word 这样的词。如：

Here are two pieces of advice. 这是两条建议。

Let me give you a bit of advice. 让我给你一点忠告吧。

There was nobody to tell him, to hint him, to give him at least a word of advice. 没有人告诉他，或暗示他，或起码给他一句忠言。

2. 表示按照某人的意见做某事，一般要用介词 on 或 by。如：

We did the work by her advice. 我们按她的意见做此工作。

Claire went to Paris on Sarah’s advice. 克莱尔听取萨拉的忠告去了巴黎。

3. 表示提出建议或忠告，一般用动词 give；表示向某人请教或征求意见，一般用动词 ask (for)；表示接受意见或劝告，一般用动词take, follow, accept 等。如：

The old often give good advice to the young. 老年人常常对年轻人提出金玉良言。

You should ask for the teacher’s advice. /You should ask the teacher for advice. 你应该去征求老师的意见。

If we had followed his advice, we could have done the job better with less money and fewer people. 要是听取了他的意见，我们不仅可以节省人力、物力，而且还会把工作做得更好。
