above的用法说明

■用作介词

1. 高于，高出，在…上方：

He is above the middle height. 他是中等以上的身材。

The temperature must be above 38 today. 今天的气温肯定超过摄氏38度。

2. 在…上游，在…前面：

The power station is above the new bridge. 那座电站在新桥的上游。

3. 超过，胜过：

Applicants must be above the age of 18. 申请人的年龄须超过18岁。

Mr Smith is above me in the office. 在办公室里史密斯先生的地位比我高。

4. 不屑于，不至于，不会：

He is above doing such things. 他不至于做出这样的事来。

【用法辨析】above, over：

(1)两者都可表示“高于”，over 主要表示垂直在上的正上方，而above则不一定表示正上方(即表示正上方时两者均可用，不表示正上方时要用above)：

They built a new room above [over] the garage. 他们在车房上加盖了一个新房间。

Can you see the helicopter above [over] the building? 你能看到那架正在建筑物上方的直升飞机吗？(2)两者均可表示数目、数量等的“多于”“超过”“…以上”：

Over [Above] 200 people were there. 有 200 多人在那儿。但在现代英语中，above的这种用法已不多见，通常用over代之。在现代英语中，above表示“多于”时，主要用于表示温度、高度以及有纵向标准可比的情况：

It is 2 000 ft above sea level. 它海拔 2 000 英尺。(3)若含有动态或覆盖的意味，通常用over，而不用above：

She put a scarf over her hair. 她在头发上盖了一块头巾。

The example given above is worthy to be studied. 上例值得研究。
