young与youth的用法

一、young的用法

1. 用作形容词，表示“年轻的”，与old（年老的）相对，两者在并列时，其位置可颠倒。如：

This is a book for young and old. 这是一本老少皆宜的书。

Both young and old like ice cream. 不论老少都喜欢吃冰淋。

People, old and young, were delighted. 不管老少所有的人都很高兴。

2. 用于 the young, 表示“年轻人”，具有复数意义。如：

That music is popular with the young. 那样的音乐年轻人喜欢。

The young are mostly ambitious. 年轻人多半有雄心。

3. 英语有句谚语叫you’re only young once，其意为“青春只一度”。如：

Enjoy the disco—you’re only young once. 尽情跳起迪斯科——须知青春只一度。

二、youth的用法

注意以下用法及其可数性：

1. 表示“青春”，是不可数名词。如：

She has lost the bloom of youth. 她已青春不再。

We are all in the prime of youth. 我们都正值青春大好年华。

2. 表示“青年时代”“年轻时候”，是不可数名词。如：

I often went there in my youth. 我小时候常去那儿。

The music evoked memories of her youth. 这乐曲勾起她对青年时期的回忆。

3. 表示“青年人”，有两种用法：

(1) 用作个体名词（可数），主要用来指男青年而不指女青年。如：

As a youth he was on the school team. 他年轻时曾参加过校队。

这样用的 youth 有时带有贬义。如：

As a youth he showed little promise. 他这个小伙子看不出有什么出息。

A woman was attacked and robbed by a gang of youths. 有一妇女遭到一群青年的袭击和抢劫。

(2) 用作集合名词，表整体（可指男女青年），用作主语时谓语可用单数或复数。如：

The youth of today is [are] fond of dancing. 现在的年青人都喜欢跳舞。

The youth of the country is [are] ready to fight. 全国的青年都准备战斗。
