congratulate[kEn5grAtjuleit] vt.祝贺，庆贺：I congratulated Susan on passing her exam. 苏珊考及格了，我向她祝贺。/ They congratulated him on his 70th birthday. 他们祝贺他的70寿辰。

【说明】1.其宾语通常是人，不是事；要表示因某事而祝贺，用介词 on [upon]，如“我祝贺他取得成功”应译为I congratulate him on his success. 不能译为I congratulate his success. 2.不接不定式的复合结构作宾语，即不说congratulate sb to do sth，而说congratulate sb on doing sth。

congratulation[kEn7grAtFu5leiFEn] n. [C,U]祝贺，庆贺：It’s a matter for congratulation. 那是一件值得庆贺的事。/ Congratulations on your success. 祝贺你取得了成功。/ We sent Mary our congratulations when she passed her examination. 玛丽考试合格后我们去信向她祝贺。

【说明】除表示抽象意义的“祝贺”为不可数名词外，在具体场合下的祝贺或表示祝贺辞等，通常要用复数形式。
