disappointed[7disE5pRintid] adj.失望的They are very disappointed that they cant stay longer. 他们未能多呆些日子感到很失望。/ My parents will be disappointed in / with me if I fail to get the master degree. 如果我得不到硕士文凭我的父母将为我感到失望。/ Are you very disappointed about [at] losing the game? 你是不是因为比赛输了而感到很失望?

辨析disappointing disappointed:前者表示“令人失望的”指的是事物给人的感受;而后表示“失望的”、“感到失望的”指的是人自己的感受。比较:a disappointed look 失望的表情 / a disappointing look 令人失望的表情 / He was very disappointing. 他很令人失望。/ He was very disappointed. 他感到很失望。

disaster[dizB:stE] n. [C,U]灾难祸患:Thousands died in the disaster. 数千人死于这场灾难。/ It was a disaster for [to] the farmers. 这对于农民是一场灾难。

discount[dis5kaunt] n. [C,U]折扣:we give (a) 10 per cent discount for cash. 现金付款九折优惠。/ We give a discount for cash. 现金交易可打折扣。

discourage[dis5kQridV] vt. 1.(使)气馁(使)沮丧:He is easily discouraged by difficulties. 他遇到困难就容易泄气。2.打消(念头)Jenny’s parents tried to discourage her from leaving school. 珍妮的父母想办法让她别退学。

discover[di5skQvE] vt. 发现发觉了解:Columbus discovered America in 1492. 哥伦布于1492 年发现了美洲。/ It was never discovered how he had died. 始终没有弄明白他是怎么死的。

辨析discover invent:前者主要表示“发现”原来已经存在的东西后者主要表示“发明”原来不存在的东西:Franklin discovered electricity, but Edison invented the electric light bulb. 弗兰克林发现了电而爱迪生发明了电灯泡。
